KOTA KINABALU: A man who has been walking around with a fake identity card for 20 years has been sent to spend two years behind bars by the Magistrate’s Court here, on Friday.
Razlan Yusuf pleaded guilty to using the MyKad which is registered under another person’s name before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles.
The 49-year-old, who also holds an Indonesian passport, faced charges under Regulations 25(1) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amended 2007), which carries a penalty of three years in jail, or a fine up to RM20,00, or booth, upon conviction.
Charles ordered the accused to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on July 16, 2024, and later referred to the Immigration Department upon completing his sentence for further action.
According to the facts of the case, the accused went to the National Registration Department (NRD) counter of the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) building, here, on Tuesday (July 16) to verify some documents, including the identity card.
He was later detained at 3pm after being suspected of possessing an identity card numbered 771127-12-5563 which was registered under the name of one Mohd Jefri bin Mohd Taib.
Further inspection by the Sabah NRD’s Identification Card Division showed that Razlan’s identity card was not in their records.
Investigations also found that the accused had an Indonesian passport numbered C8030359 under the name Razlan bin Yusuf, which is his true identification document.
As a result, the accused was found to have committed an offence for possessing a fake citizenship identity card without valid authority or reasonable cause.
Meanwhile, Sabah NRD prosecuting officer Mohd Naser Mohd Nadzeri, in his argument, requested the court to impose an appropriate sentence for the offence committed by the accused.
During mitigation, Mohd Naser said the accused had used the fake identity card for 20 years, claiming to have obtained it in 2004 through a middleman for RM300.
The accused, who worked at a petrol station in Luyang, near here, was not represented by a lawyer.
