Quarry worker killed in landslide in Batu Pahat


BATU PAHAT: A 52-year-old excavator operator was killed in a landslide at a quarry here.

Batu Pahat acting OCPD Supt Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the incident, which took place at Simpang Kanan here, was reported at 3.43pm on Thursday (July 18).

“The landslide covered the excavator, which was operated by the victim at the time, burying him along with the heavy vehicle.

“The authorities such as police, Fire and Rescue Department, medical personnel as well as quarry workers immediately tried to rescue the victim.

“However, when the victim was removed from the debris, he was pronounced dead at the site,” he said in a statement on Friday (July 19).

He added that the victim was identified as Eswandi Sapri and was sent to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail Batu Pahat for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, Batu Pahat Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Ridwan Gembor said the victim’s leg was caught in the door of the excavator during the incident.

“Our team used specialised equipment to cut open the vehicle door to extricate the victim,” he added.
