Malaysians have high hopes for new King

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysians are hopeful that more inclusiveness and greater unity will be fostered during the reign of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

Chiang Kee Chuan, 43, who had the privilege of meeting Sultan Ibrahim in 2015 at a restaurant in Perth, Australia, said he was impressed by His Majesty’s humility and genuine concern for the welfare of the people.

“Sultan Ibrahim came across as a thoughtful and compassionate individual, dedicated to understanding the needs and aspirations of His Majesty’s subjects.

“His Majesty’s charisma and approachable nature left a lasting positive impression on me,” he said when met at his restaurant here.

For the next few years, he hopes to see a prosperous and harmonious society where every citizen feels valued and has opportunities to succeed.

“It will be encouraging to witness significant improvements in infrastructure, education system and healthcare.

“I hope the country continues to improve its global standing and foster strong international relations,” he said.

Ara Azmi, 34, who works in housekeeping, has heard wonderful stories about the new King and hopes His Majesty will lead the country towards unity and growth.

The Kelantan native, who has been in Penang for 20 years, said what is most important is for everyone to live in harmony.

“We are a multicultural country and that makes us unique. I believe His Majesty will encourage us to celebrate it.

“It is also important for the country to prosper and be peaceful as well. One without the other will not work,” said Ara.

P. Somasundaram, 64, who runs a rice stall, also hopes for racial harmony.

“I grew up here and this is my home.

“I hope we can remain united and look out for each other.

“This is something we have to work on together and I hope the new King champions this with us,” he said.

Somasundaram said he is happy with our way life and hopes others will be able to experience this.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic we struggled, but now it is back to normal.

“I want the same for others and hope there is a way to make sure all of us live comfortably here,” he said.
