KOTA KINABALU: A Royal Brunei serviceman was killed after the high-powered motorbike he was riding in a convoy was involved in a collision in Sabah’s interior Keningau district.

Sgt-Major Mohammad Joeriman Abdul Latif was rushed to the district hospital following the incident that occurred at KM39 Jalan Keningau-Tambunan at about 10am on Saturday.

However, the 40-year-old succumbed to his serious injuries about five hours later.

Keningau police chief Supt Yampil Garai said the victim was riding as part of a convoy that also included four other motorcycles.

He said they were heading to Sandakan to attend a motorbike festival which took place from July 19-21 in the east coast district.

When they reached the area, Supt Yampil said a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle driven by a 70-year-old man suddenly came out from a junction and onto the main road.

“The victim tried to avoid a collision by veering to the right, but instead crashed onto the front right side of the vehicle,” he said when contacted.

The impact of the collision resulted in the victim being thrown under the 4WD vehicle, he added.

“The victim suffered serious injuries to the body and also sustained a broken leg,” Supt Yampil said.

“He was rushed to Hospital Keningau but was pronounced dead at the emergency ward at 2.56pm.”

He added that the driver of 4WD vehicle had been detained for questioning under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
