GEORGE TOWN: There is a growing trend of customers opting for less sugar in their drinks.
Mohamad Adam Mohamad Azahari, 26, who operates a franchise selling roadside beverages in Bayan Baru, Penang, said his customers are a multiracial bunch with an age range of between 30 and 50.
“Although some of them are sweet-toothed and love sugar in our beverages, there is a growing number of customers who ask for less sugar when ordering their drinks,” he said.

He said this trend could be a result of growing health concerns among the public, especially the younger generation.
Another trader, Nor Azura Abu Bakar, 44, who sells apam balik in Bayan Baru, said her customers love eating the pancake, which typically contains sugar and other sweet condiments.
“Lately, I have been getting customers who don’t want any sugar in their apam balik.
“I try my best to oblige their requests and prepare the pancake according to their needs.”Nor Azura shared that the price of the pancake remains the same with or without sugar at RM1 for the small size and RM4.80 for the bigger apam balik.
Apam balik is usually filled with ingredients such as crushed peanuts, sugar and sweet corn or butter.
It is a popular street food and can be found in various forms, either thick and fluffy or thin and crispy, depending on the region or vendor.
