Man arrested for drink driving, 20 summonses issued in integrated Penampang anti-crime operation

KOTA KINABALU: A man driving under the influence of alcohol was among the traffic offenders detected during a roadblock in Penampang near here.

Penampang police chief Supt Sammy Newton said the man was subsequently detained under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He said the individual could be jailed for a maximum of two years and fined up to RM30,000 if found guilty in court.

He added the police inspected 89 vehicles in two roadblocks mounted at Jalan Penampang-Kota Kinabalu and Jalan Papar-Kota Kinabalu.

The roadblocks were part of the district police’s integrated anti-crime operation on Saturday night (July 20).

“In total, we issued 20 summonses to motorists for various traffic offences,” he said in a statement on the operation involving 30 police personnel.

“We screened a total of 92 people in the operation which went smoothly without any untoward incidents,” Supt Sammy added.

“We will continue to carry out such initiatives from time to time in efforts to make the public feel safer,” he said.

At the same time, he noted, they also carried out spot checks at two other locations namely near a bank and a supermarket in Putatan, aimed at advocating road safety among motorists.
