Take advantage of latest tech to keep kids safe

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysia Cyber Consumer Association is calling on parents to use the latest technology to safeguard their children.

Its president Siraj Jalil said cases of missing children, such as the recent case in Eco Galleria in Iskandar Puteri, should serve as a reminder.

“Cases of missing persons have occurred for years, but these days we have the advantage of using technology (to find them).

“I personally put GPS trackers on my children because our surroundings are not what they used to be; parents should exercise more control to increase family safety.

“There are many options for GPS tracking devices available on ecommerce platforms at various prices,” he said.

Siraj added that trackers like the Apple AirTag were more suitable for tracking items at close-range.

“The best options for children under 12 are GPS watches or GPS tracking devices.

“Some schools may not allow children to wear smartwatches, so parents can choose other options.

“For teenagers and adults who have access to mobile phones, they can install tracking applications and ensure their GPS locations are always on,” he added.

He noted that having a GPS tracker would help authorities and family members locate missing victims.

He was commenting on the disappearance of six-year-old Albertine Leo Jia Hui who went missing during the Bon Odori Japanese festival at Eco Galleria on Saturday.

The girl was said to be playing near the booth where her mother Leo Qieo Xin, 37, was selling drinks before she went missing.
