Melaka local authority employee claims trial to graft charges

MELAKA: A Melaka City Council (MBMB) employee pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here on Wednesday (July 24) to two charges of receiving bribes totalling RM2,700 from an advertising contractor in Melaka in 2021 and last year.

According to the charges, Muhammad Firdaus Ab Aziz, 41, who is an assistant administrative officer at MBMB (Competency), is accused of receiving RM2,200 and RM500 in cash from Syarikat Pusat Pengiklanan Prisma manager Ong Ah Siong for supply work offered by the local authority (PBT).

The accused allegedly committed the offences on October 27, 2021, and between January 15 and 31, 2023, in the Melaka Tengah district.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code and can be punished under the same section, which carries a maximum prison term of two years, a fine, or both, if convicted.

Earlier, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Azriff Firdaus Mohamad Ali proposed that the accused be granted bail of RM5,000 with additional conditions, including reporting to the MACC office in Melaka once a month and surrendering his passport.

Muhammad Firdaus, who was not represented, requested the court to impose a lower bail amount.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan set bail at RM4,000 with one surety, imposed all the additional conditions and fixed re-mention on Aug 14. - Bernama
