1,671 police officers shown the door in past decade

KUALA LUMPUR: Last year, 1,396 police officers and personnel were found guilty of various types of misconduct, according to Bukit Aman’s Department of Integrity and Standards Compliance (JIPS).

The 1,396 were among the 19,352 personnel who were investigated last year, JIPS director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad (pic) said.

In comparison, from January to June this year, out of the 11,221 personnel investigated so far, 689 of them were found guilty of having committed various kinds of misconduct.

The JIPS intelligence and operations branch, which serves as a detection and verification unit, has also conducted thousands of operations and arrested 798 offenders for allegedly gambling, abusing drugs, as well as making inappropriate visits to entertainment facilities.

Azri added that over the past 10 years, the force had expelled 1,671 individuals from its ranks, while 15,546 officers and rank-and-file policemen had also been subjected to disciplinary action during the same time period, Bernama reported.

He said these actions were from 40,436 disciplinary inquiries that had been opened between 2014 and 2024.

“The Compliance Branch of JIPS periodically monitors and directly inspects approximately 10,000 to 20,000 police personnel in terms of compliance.

“The priority is on frontline personnel who interact directly with the public to ensure they perform their duties in compliance with laws, regulations, directives, as well as standard operating procedures (SOP).

“Any officer found to be engaging in misconduct will be dealt with accordingly.

“The basic principle is that the more frequent the inspections, the higher the level of prevention,” Azri told reporters during the department’s 10-year anniversary celebration at Bukit Aman here today.

Over the past 10 years, JIPS has received and handled nearly 50,000 complaints and public tip-offs on allegations of corruption, abuse of power and misconduct among members of the force, he said.
