Duo fined for putting up illegal moneylender adverts in PD


PORT DICKSON: Two friends were fined RM3,000 each in default three months' jail by a Magistrate's Court here after they pleaded guilty to putting up buntings promoting the business of an unlicensed moneylender.

R. Logeswaran, 25, and V. Rajasingam, 22, did not contest the charge after it was read to them before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani on Friday (July 26).

They were charged with committing the offence at 2.40pm on July 18 along Jalan Pasar Pekan Lukut near here.

They were charged under Section 29AA(1) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 read together with Section 34 of the same legislation.

Offenders can be jailed for up to two years or fined up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

DPP Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal asked the court to impose a sentence commensurate with the offence as a deterrent to others.

However, Muhammad Adam Hasan from the Legal Aid Department asked for a minimum fine as both the accused were bachelors and did not earn much.

Both the accused paid the fine.
