KPDN seizes hoarded staples in Bayan Lepas

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) seized a significant quantity of subsidised cooking oil, sugar and flour during raids on two grocery stores in Bayan Lepas near here yesterday.

State KPDN director S. Jegan (pic) said the raids, conducted through a joint operation with the police, were done following information and intelligence regarding the premises, under the suspicion of operating without controlled goods permits.

“The first case involved an inspection of a grocery store suspected of operating without a controlled goods permit.

“In the second case, a vehicle suspected of transporting controlled goods heading to a nearby grocery store was detained,” he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

Jegan said further inspection revealed that the grocery store was also operating without a controlled goods permit, resulting in action being taken against the owner.

As a result of the two raids, the authorities seized 300kg of various branded cooking oil packets, 330kg of coarse granulated sugar, 40kg of premium coarse sugar and 129 packs of various branded wheat flour.

A pickup truck was also seized in these raids.

Jegan said the total value of the seizures were estimated at RM37,209.90.
