Sabah launches SaBIIS, a database of the state’s flora and fauna

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah launches the Sabah Biodiversity Integrated Information System (SaBIIS), a database of the state’s flora and fauna built from data collected over 50 years by various agencies.

A companion mobile application called iSaBIIS that lets the public contribute to the database was also launched.

SaBIIS and iSaBIIS were developed by the Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SBC) with support from Digital Heritage Sdn Bhd.

“I hope the data analysis from each participating organisation and public contributions can be produced and used as scientific facts for future project proposals,” said Sabah State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong at the launch here, on Friday (July 26).

The Sabah Forestry Department, Sabah Agriculture Department, Sabah Museum Department, Sabah Parks, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and WWF-Malaysia were among the organisations that participated in the data collection.

At the event, Safar also launched the Sabah Biodiversity Centre Strategic Plan 2022-2032, which will serve as a reference and guide for developing and conserving biodiversity in Sabah over the next decade.

In addition, two signings were carried out at the event. The first was a Data Sharing Consent between SBC and data providers consisting of Sabah Forestry Department, Sabah Agriculture Department, Sabah Museum, and WWF-Malaysia.

The second signing was a memorandum of understanding between the centre and Yayasan PETRONAS. The two parties agreed to collaborate on seagrass conservation in Malaysia through the Seagrass Mapping and Community Activity programmes over the next five years.
