17-gun salute marks start of Penang investiture ceremony


GEORGE TOWN: A 17-gun salute marked the start of the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the 75th birthday celebration of Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak on Saturday (July 27).

This was followed by the inspection of the Guard of Honour by Ahmad Fuzi at Dewan Sri Pinang.

The ceremony was postponed as the initial date overlapped with the installation ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th King of Malaysia.

This year, a total of 1,346 individuals will receive state awards, medals and honours.

A total of 142 will be conferred awards leading to honorary titles while another 1,204 will receive medals and stars to mark their service to society.

DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang tops the list, receiving the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN), which comes with the title “Datuk Seri Utama” the highest state award given to anyone in Penang.

This will be followed by 28 recipients of the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN) which carries the Datuk Seri title.

There are 10 recipients receiving the Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negeri (DMPN) and 103 receiving the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) titles which carry the Datuk title.

Of the other state awards and medals, 102 are receiving the Darjah Johan Negeri, 30 are receiving the Bintang Cemerlang Negeri, 205 are conferred the Pingat Kelakuan Terpuji, one recipient will be conferred the Pingat Gagah Perwira, 328 will receive the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian, 516 will receive Pingat Jasa Masyarakat and 22 will receive Pingat Bakti Setia.

The ceremony which begins today will resume on Monday to Wednesday next week.
