Painted leatherbacks spotted in Kuantan

KUANTAN: The “giant turtles” are back on a Malaysian beach, albeit in the form of murals.

Beachgoers to Pantai Tanjung Pelindung have been making a beeline to snap selfies with the murals painted on the rocks.

The mural is the work of four artists: Amir Faruk, Kamal Idris, Azri Azahar and Muhd Ikmal Manan.

The giant leatherback sea turtle, which can grow to 2.7m and weigh up to 500kg, used to nest on local beaches, particularly in Kelantan and Terengganu, before becoming extinct in Malaysia.

Azri said they completed the mammoth task in just five days.

He said the team battled the weather and uneven rock surface to paint the mural.

“We had to use scaffolding to paint the rocks.

“The weather was also very hot.

“We had to take shelter to protect ourselves from heatstroke,” he said.

Azri added that the team was thrilled that the mural received such positive feedback and quickly went viral.

He said that the Pahang Land and Mines Office and Tourism Pahang had drawn up the proposal and provided full funding for the gigantic mural.
