Troubled by crematorium shortage

INDIAN residents in several towns in Perak are having difficulty with the lack of proper cremation facilities, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Residents in Tanjung Malim, Slim River, Behrang, Sungkai, Bidor and Tapah currently have to go all the way to a Chinese-owned and operated crematorium in Kampar when there are deaths in their families.

Many have to resort to going to Teluk Intan because of the limited availability in Kampar, residents told the daily.

It is also not easy to have traditional cremations in Hindu cemeteries due to a shortage of firewood, so they have to depend on the crematoriums, M. Sathiaseelan, who lives in Tapah, said.

He also noted the trend of Hindu cemeteries being made to give way to developments.

The lack of cremation facilities must be addressed urgently for the community’s benefit, he added..
