Couple high on drugs nabbed after car chase

JOHOR BARU: A couple who had tried to flee from a routine police inspection triggered a car chase across several areas here.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the car was driven by a 27-year-old man with his girlfriend, 20, and her child in tow.

He said the incident unfolded at 11.20pm on Wednesday when a team of policemen was conducting a regular crime prevention patrol in Taman Impian Emas in Skudai noticed the car driven in a suspicious manner.

“Despite being flagged down for an inspection, the driver sped off.

“He drove through several areas in Johor Baru with six police patrol vehicles in hot pursuit.

“The driver was finally stopped and arrested in Taman Impian Emas,” he said yesterday.

ACP Balveer added that the couple had tried to flee as they were under the influence of drugs.

“Both tested positive for methamphetamine,” he said.

The incident was caught in a 17-second video and posted on social media platform X, which showed six police vehicles pursuing a car.

The child in the car sparked claims of suspected kidnapping by some social media users.

ACP Balveer clarified that it was not a kidnapping case and the young passenger was the female suspect’s child.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties.
