Elderly man among eight arrested in Tawau cockfighting raid

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man who was not fast enough to evade enforcement officers has been nabbed, along with seven others, at their usual cockfighting base in Tawau on Saturday (July 27).

The eight men, comprising five locals and three foreigners aged between 25 and 71 years old, were engrossed in the cockfighting session when they were caught off guard by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department Division in the 12.50pm raid.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said their team raided the cockfighting base located in a palm oil plantation along Jalan Tawau-Kunak, seizing eight roosters used for the illegal gambling activity.

"Additionally, we have confiscated cockfighting equipment and cash amounting to RM1,000," he said in a statement on Sunday (July 28).

He added that the 71-year-old man and the seven others are being investigated under Section 21 of the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015.

"The case is also being investigated under the Commong Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said.

Meanwhile, ACP Jasmin stressed that cockfighting is an illegal act and warned that strict action would be taken against any individual involved in such gambling activities.
