SIB church razed in morning fire in Nabawan

KOTA KINABALU: A Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) church, its hall and living quarters were destroyed in a fire in Sabah’s interior Nabawan district on Monday (July 29).

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre assistant chief Riki Mohan Singh Ramday said they were alerted of the blaze at Kampung Enam at 9.50am.

A fire team from the Nabawan station led by senior fire officer Rudy Mekii was immediately dispatched to the scene, reaching the area four minutes later.

He said the fire had already engulfed a block of buildings comprising the church, hall and living quarters when the team arrived.

“The buildings were some 80% destroyed by then,” he said when contacted.

“Our men managed to get the fire under control at about 10.50am and there was no report of people getting hurt,” he added.

Riki said the operation was ended at 12.28pm after the team ensured there was no further risk of the fire reigniting.

“The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the department,” he said.
