Two killed in four-vehicle crash in Beaufort

KOTA KINABALU: Two people, including an elderly woman, died in an accident involving four vehicles at Kilometer 41 along the Beaufort - Menumbok road about 100km from here.

The 73-year-old woman and a 23-year-old motorcyclist were killed in the accident that occurred at an intersection to Jalan Kilugus Tangulian at about 3.30pm on Sunday (July 28).

Beaufort district police chief Deputy Supt Ismail Abdullah said the accident involved four vehicles - a lorry, a car and two motorcycles.

He said the lorry and the car with three passengers were traveling from Beaufort towards Menumbok while two motorbikes were coming from the opposite direction.

Based on initial police investigations, he said the lorry driver slowed down suddenly to turn into the intersection of Jalan Kilugus Tangulian.

However, he said, the car driver, who was right behind him, could not stop and hit the rear of the lorry before overturning and crashing into two oncoming motorcycles.

He said seven injured victims were taken to Kuala Penyu Hospital to receive further treatment. But, one of the motorcyclists and the elderly woman died while being treated at the hospital.

DSP Ismail said the lorry driver did not suffer any injuries.

He said investigations were continuing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
