Duo trapped in Jitra sewer found dead

JITRA: Two men who were reported trapped in a sewer near SMK Paya Kemunting here have been found dead.

The men, aged 27 and 31, were confirmed dead by health officials after rescuers carried them out of the 4.5m-deep sewer at about 11am on Tuesday (July 30).

Jitra fire station senior assistant chief Mohd Bustan Karudin said rescuers received a distress call at 9.29am and arrived at the scene 10 minutes later.

"We received the alert of victims trapped in the sewer and upon arrival, found that there were two people inside.

"A gas detector was used to ensure safety inside the sewer before a police forensics team arrived at the scene.

"The victims were then retrieved by rescuers in personal protection equipment (PPE)," he said.

Bustan said the victims are believed to be members of the public and not workers involved in any tasks inside the sewer.

He said it was uncertain how the duo ended up inside the sewer, adding they could not have fallen in because the entryway was closed before the incident.

The bodies have been handed to the police for further action, he added.
