Pahang Ruler wants state govt to ensure Cameron Highlands land not rented to foreigners

KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang has rebuked those who lack integrity by allowing the state's lands to be "colonised" by foreigners.

Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said lands in Cameron Highlands, which were leased to local farmers and entrepreneurs, are now being rented out to foreigners.

"Driven by greed and the pursuit of profit, we are willing to sacrifice our integrity and allow our land to be exploited by those who do not own it.

"Moreover, it is even more disappointing that these foreigners have taken on the role of 'tauke', controlling the supply and prices in the agricultural industry, leading to the emergence of cartels that harm the state's and the country's economy as a whole," said Al-Sultan Abdullah at an investiture ceremony held in conjunction with his 65th birthday on Tuesday (July 30).

His Royal Highness called on the state government to monitor these activities and take stringent enforcement action to ensure that they do not occur again.

"There will be no compromise on such issues from me. Do not be blinded by money and temporary worldly pleasures.

"Fulfil the trust given with full integrity and remember that every action and responsibility will be accounted for later," he said.

Al-Sultan Abdullah also urged citizens to cooperate in providing information to the authorities about all forms of crime and misconduct, emphasising that this is a shared responsibility.

"I also urge the state government and relevant authorities to thoroughly review the development plans in Cameron Highlands, especially future developments.

"Only with a holistic, firm, and sustainable approach can we protect this highland area from all forms of greed and irresponsible actions," he said.

Al-Sultan Abdullah also said that human trafficking and migrant smuggling are issues that need serious attention.

"I have been informed that there are syndicates using Pahang as a transit point for these crimes, whether through land or sea routes.

"In this regard, I want all enforcement agencies to act more aggressively and consistently to combat these crimes effectively," he said.

His Royal Highness warned that if these issues are not addressed properly, they will not only pose security threats but also impact social harmony, economic stability, and other development sectors.

On environmental conservation, Al-Sultan Abdullah pointed out that rivers are often polluted by industrial waste, plastic waste, and harmful chemicals that damage the environment and endanger human health.

"This earth is not an inheritance from our ancestors but a loan from our descendants.

"Therefore, I remind all parties, whether government, industry players, local communities, or individuals, to work together in preserving the environment. Do not let the beauty of this green earth be tainted by pollution and our own negligence," he said.

While extending his congratulations to the recipients of state honours and medals, Al-Sultan Abdullah reminded them that each medal represents not only an appreciation but also a trust.

He emphasised that this recognition carries a significant responsibility as it requires recipients to uphold the values of loyalty, honour, and justice in every action.

"Do not let these worldly awards become a source of arrogance and pride. Instead, be an example and role model to society.

"I also want to remind everyone here that I will not compromise and will not hesitate to revoke any honours awarded if there is misconduct that undermines the reputation of the royal institution and the country," said Al-Sultan Abdullah.
