Sultan Abdullah unhappy with those renting land to foreign interests

KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang has rebuked those who had allowed state land to be “colonised” by foreigners.

Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah cited land in Cameron Highlands leased to local farmers and entrepreneurs which His Royal Highness said is now being rented out to foreigners.

“Driven by greed and the pursuit of profit, we are willing to sacrifice our integrity to allow our land to be exploited by those who do not own it.

“It is even more disappointing that these foreigners have taken on the role of ‘taukeh’ (bosses) who control supply and prices in the agricultural industry, leading to cartels that harm the state and national economy as a whole,” Sultan Abdullah said at an investiture ceremony held in conjunction with his 65th birthday here yesterday.

His Royal Highness said the state government must monitor these activities and take strict enforcement action to ensure that it does not recur.

“There will be no compromise on such issues from me. Do not be blinded by money and temporary pleasures.

“Fulfil the trust given with full integrity and remember that every action and responsibility will be accounted for later,” the Ruler said.

Sultan Abdullah also urged the people to cooperate in providing information to the authorities about all forms of crime and misconduct, adding that this is a shared responsibility.

“I also urge the state government and relevant authorities to thoroughly review development plans in Cameron Highlands, especially involving future development.

“Only with a holistic, firm and sustainable approach can we protect this highland area from all forms of greed and irresponsible actions.”

Sultan Abdullah said human trafficking and migrant smuggling are issues that need serious attention.

“I have been informed that there are syndicates using Pahang as a transit point for these crimes, whether through land or sea routes.

“In this regard, I want all enforcement agencies to act more aggressively and consistently to combat such crimes effectively,” the Ruler added.

His Royal Highness warned that if these issues are not addressed, they will not only pose a threat to security but also affect social harmony and economic stability.

On environmental conservation, Sultan Abdullah said rivers are often polluted by industrial and plastic waste – as well as harmful chemicals – that damage the environment and endanger human health.

“This Earth is not an inheritance from our ancestors but a loan from our descendants. I remind all, be it the government, industry players, local communities or individuals, to work together in preserving the environment.

“Do not let the beauty of this green earth be tainted by pollution and our own negligence,” His Royal Highness said.

In extending his congratulations to recipients of state honours and medals, Sultan Abdullah reminded them that each medal represents not just appreciation but also trust.

His Royal Highness said the recognition carries a significant responsibility, as it requires recipients to uphold the values of loyalty, honour and justice in every action.

“Do not let the awards become a source of arrogance and pride. Instead, be an example and role model to society.

“I also want to remind everyone here that I will not compromise and will not hesitate to revoke honours awarded if there is misconduct undermining the reputation of the royal institution and that of the country,” said Sultan Abdullah.
