PUTRAJAYA: A bipartisan rally in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle will be held this Sunday (Aug 4), says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister said the Cabinet had decided to organise the solidarity gathering to show support for the people of Palestine.
It is scheduled to take place starting from 8pm, at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
"The public are invited to attend the gathering and we will use this space for everyone to show their solidarity.
"We hope this will send a clear signal to the international community that Malaysia’s stance on the Palestine issue remains unchanged
"We will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine," he told a press conference on Thursday (Aug 1).
On Wednesday (July 31), the Cabinet called for an investigation to be carried out immediately into the assassination of former Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniyeh so that those responsible can be brought to justice.
He said the Cabinet, following its weekly meeting, has condemned the assassination of the Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran, and is standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Hamas announced on Wednesday that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting his residence in the Iranian capital, according to Anadolu Agency.
Fahmi said the Cabinet had unanimously condemned the brutal and disrespectful killing of Haniyeh.
"As mentioned by the Prime Minister in his latest social media post, this act is also an attempt to sabotage the ongoing peace and ceasefire efforts," noted Fahmi.
He also revealed that the Cabinet could not send a representative to attend Haniyeh's funeral due to time constraints.
"However, a representative from the Malaysian embassy will attend on behalf of the government. It is understood that the funeral will take place in Qatar, and the embassy representative will be present."
According to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA), the funeral ceremony to bid farewell to martyr Ismail Haniyeh started Thursday (Aug 1) morning at the University of Tehran.
Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei will pray over the body of Haniyeh.
The office of the Supreme Leader said the funeral prayer will be held at the university premises before the march toward the Azadi Square.
Haniyeh was assassinated along with one of his bodyguards in their accommodation in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday (July 31).
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The republic of Iran has already announced three days of public mourning.
