18 foreign nationals arrested in early morning raid in Segambut

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bangladeshi man risked his life by clinging to the grille of a balcony on the 10th floor of an apartment in Segambut to evade arrest during a raid by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department here early Friday (Aug 2) morning.

However, his tactic was discovered when Immigration personnel searched the house and he was pulled up to safety, and then arrested for overstaying and working without a permit.

The man, who is a building cleaner, was among 18 illegal immigrants, including a boy, arrested in the raid at the apartment.

Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said the boy, aged two years, was among five Indonesian nationals arrested in the raid.

The others are Bangladeshi (six), Sri Lanka (three), Filipino (2), Pakistan (one) and Myanmar (one), he said, adding that they were among 104 individuals rounded up during the three-hour operation which ended at 3am today.

Those arrested were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department for documentation and then sent to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot, he told reporters at the scene of the raid.

Meanwhile, a resident representative who requested to be identified as Steve said the number of foreigners living in the apartment began to increase in 2019, much to the discomfort of the locals.

"These (foreign) people always make noise at night, especially during holidays. We also see them drinking liquor in the swimming pool here, this makes us uncomfortable to take the children out," he said. - Bernama
