Aviation sector decarbonisation roadmap ready by September, says Transport Ministry

PUTRAJAYA: A roadmap to guide the local aviation sector on adopting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be launched in September, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said the Cabinet paper on the National Decarbonisation Roadmap for Aviation was tabled to the Cabinet on Wednesday (July 31).

"This roadmap will be launched in September and it is a policy and guide for the aviation sector on how we can be a more efficient nation that contributes to decarbonisation," he said during his speech at an event in the Transport Ministry on Friday (Aug 2).

Loke said the new initiative could contribute to various new economic sectors such as renewable energy.

At a press conference later, he said the Cabinet had endorsed and approved the blueprint for publishing and implementation.

"It will involve airlines, airport operators and also our adoption of SAF. It will encompass a few sectors and elements toward decarbonisation," he said.

He said the roadmap was drawn up based on input from many airline stakeholders.

"We will discuss the final version and once we finish our meeting (with stakeholders), we will launch the blueprint," he added.

Loke said the roadmap is committed to the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (Corsia).

According to reports, SAF, made from waste oils and agricultural feedstock, can cut carbon emissions from air travel by as much as 80%.
