KUALA LUMPUR: Over 300 master tailors, designers and fashion enthusiasts from 14 countries in Asia and Europe are flocking to the city for the 28th Federation of Asian Master Tailors (FAMT) Congress 2024.
Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the event, which kicked off yesterday and will run till next Tuesday, aims to showcase individual skills and talents, as well as promote exchanges among industry professionals.
He said tailoring, like many other industries, contributes not only to the country’s economic development and labour market but also to industrial history and cultural heritage.
“I believe that most players in this industry are self-reliant entrepreneurs or have inherited businesses from their ancestors and undoubtedly, with their own stories of struggle and experiences.
“These stories and experiences serve as good lessons or reference materials for the younger generation, particularly those who aspire to start or expand their own businesses,” he said at the opening ceremony here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Speaking to reporters later, Yeoh called on the guild to make the proposed Fashion and Design Hub a reality through a collaborative effort with the government and tailoring professionals from Asian countries.
