PM visits Sg Kelantan project site to see progress

KOTA BARU: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited the Sungai Kelantan Phase 1 Integrated River Basin Development Project site in Tunjung here, Saturday (Aug 3).

The Prime Minister arrived in Tunjung at 3.50pm, accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.

He was welcomed by Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Anuar Othman and the department’s senior management.

The Prime Minister was also briefed by Ahmad Anuar on the progress of the river basin development project, expected to be completed by 2025.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Anuar said that the Sungai Kelantan Phase 1 Integrated River Basin Project at the site had reached 94 per cent completion.

He said that Phase 1 of the project cost RM699mil, while Phase 2 involves a cost of RM1.064 bil.

"This project will reduce flooding problems and benefit 95,000 people affected by floods," he told reporters after Anwar concluded his visit to the site.

Ahmad Anuar also hoped the project would bring new hope once Bandar Baru Tunjong was fully developed and flash flood issues were eliminated.

According to Ahmad Anuar, the project involves water flowing from Sungai Seribong to Sungai Pengkalan Datu, and subsequently to the sea.

He noted that Phase 1 of the project, which began in 2018, covered 81 hectares and was expected to be completed by July next year, but that it could finish earlier despite delays caused by the COVID-19 Movement Control Order and land acquisition issues. — Bernama
