Elderly rubber tapper trampled by elephants

KLUANG: A senior citizen who was tapping rubber was killed after being trampled by elephants in Kahang here early yesterday morning.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the police received a report from the 75-year-old woman’s neighbour at 9.34am.

“We received a report from a 64-year-old man who said that he saw the victim lying motionlessly after being attacked by elephants.

“He then rushed the woman to the nearest health clinic where she was pronounced dead,” ACP Bahrin said in a statement.

He said the complainant also told the police that several people passing through the area informed him about a herd of elephants roaming the area.

“Checks at the scene found that there are indeed elephant tracks at the rubber estate,” he said.

ACP Bahrin added that the Wildlife and National Parks Department has been informed about the incident at the Batu 29 rubber plantation.

The victim died from massive internal injuries to her ribs, heart, spine and liver, he said.
