Anti-bullying campaign to be held monthly in KK schools

KOTA KINABALU: A monthly anti-bullying programme has started in schools in the city following an increase in the number of bullying cases in the country.

This initiative is hosted by seven Lion Club divisions in collaboration with the Kota Kinabalu Parliament office.

The office’s chief communications officer Kaven Lee Seng Vui said that the programme started on Monday (Aug 5) at the All Saints Secondary School and they expect to hold one each month in all the schools within the district.

“We have talks for students and teachers on bullying, what it is, how it happens, and what to do when you think you are a victim, or part of the bullying crowd, among other activities,” he said.

It is to not only create awareness of the issue and its severity and impact on society but also the legal consequences for both the bullies and accomplices.

Lee said for starters, they would focus on identifying what and how bullying is - physically and mentally, and ways to seek help.

More activities will be planned as the programme grows, he said, adding that no one should be afraid to go to school because they are being targeted, and everyone has a right to live with dignity.

“We aim to create a safe environment for everyone in schools, both students and teachers and to have victims or those with information to act instead of hiding,” he added.

The Lions Clubs involved in this programme are the Lions Club KK Waterfront, Lions Club KK Centennial, Lions Club KK Central, Lions Club KK City, Lions Club KK Damai, Lions Club of KK Metro and Lions Club of Penampang Hongkod.

During the event, speakers including policemen were invited to share their experiences on bullying cases and other information.
