Man remanded seven days for pushing wife into ravine on East-West Highway


GERIK: A man who was detained for allegedly assaulting, strangling, and pushing his wife into a ravine at KM31.2 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) between Gerik and Jeli here on July 27 has been remanded for seven days, Malay language daily Sinar Harian reports.

Magistrate Savinder Singh allowed the application for the remand order until next Monday (Aug 12) for the 39-year-old suspect, who works as a trader.

The remand application was approved to enable the police to conduct further investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

The suspect arrived at a Gerik Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (Aug 6), wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt, escorted by police officers and personnel at 8:50am, Sinar Harian reported.

It is understood that the suspect, who was previously detained at the Baling district police headquarters in Kedah last Wednesday (July 31), was remanded for six days to be investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for allegedly injuring his older brother.

The suspect was re-arrested by Gerik IPD after his remand period ended on Monday.

Previously, the media reported that the suspect was detained by police for allegedly assaulting, strangling, and pushing his wife into a ravine following a verbal altercation.

The 32-year-old victim fell into a 10m-deep ravine and managed to save herself by crawling up to the roadside, where she was found by the public at around 2 pm.

As a result of the incident, the victim is understood to have sustained injuries to her waist and has received treatment at Taiping Hospital.
