Orang Asli plead for drain

GUA MUSANG: The Orang Asli community in Kampung Kuala Lah has urged the government to build a drainage system to solve flood problems in the area.

Kampung Kuala Lah tok batin (village elder) Ali Lateh said floods often occur near their multipurpose hall and the main route through the village.

“If it rains continuously for a day, ankle-deep floodwater will accumulate. This water should actually flow into Sungai Ular, which is near the location.

“These flash floods are believed to have started after the construction of a culvert in the middle of the road, which lacks a drainage system.

“To overcome this, a drain should be built,” he told Bernama recently, adding that the flash flooding made it difficult for vehicles to use the road.

Villager Atan Jusoh, 35, said the government should also consider building a playground as the Orang Asli children do not have a specific place for recreation and play.

“There are over 50 children currently in Kampung Kuala Lah, and they need a special area to play from early morning till evening. Adults could also use the space for jogging and recreational activities with their families,” he said.

Gua Musang district council president Nik Raisnan Daud said they had received complaints about flash flooding and the need for a playground.

“Our team regularly monitors Kampung Kuala Lah as it is easily accessible by normal vehicles. We also check on farms cultivating oyster mushrooms, lemongrass, brinjals and chili.

“Regarding the proposed playground, the matter can be considered. However, we hope that once it is built, the community will cooperate in maintaining it, especially in terms of cleanliness to ensure it remains in good condition,” he added.
