Smoking kills: Lit cigarette caused fatal fire in PJ apartment, say cops

PETALING JAYA: A female senior citizen died in a fire at an apartment in Sea Park, here.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said the incident occurred around 6.45pm on Monday (Aug 5).

"The fire occurred in a room at the apartment unit, occupied by the victim.

"On top of severe burns, the 62-year-old woman suffered a broken leg two years ago and she was previously moving using a cane," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 6).

The Fire and Rescue Department's forensic team discovered that the fire was believed to have been caused by a burning cigarette, based on cigarette ashes around the victim's bed, he said.

"There are no criminal elements based on initial investigations and the case had been classified as sudden death.

"The victim has been sent to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem.

"We urge those with information on the victim to contact investigating officer Insp Safuan Alias at 011-1025 5125 or 03-7722 2222," he said.
