KANGAR: The Perlis Super League is one of the state government’s key efforts to develop and advance football in the state and reinvigorate the sports scene in Perlis, says a state executive council member.
Youth development and sports advancement committee chairman Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak said the Perlis Super League, in synergy with the Perlis Football Association, has entered its third edition and captured the attention of the people.
“For 2024, the Perlis Super League is further enlivened by the addition of the Perlis Cup, the Perlis Community Cup and the Fair Play Cup. Insya-Allah, the Perlis Super League will continue to be held for many more years and become better,” he said.
Wan Zikri Afthar was replying to a question from Abu Bakar Hamzah (PN-Kuala Perlis) during Question Time at the state legislative assembly sitting here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Abu Bakar wanted to know the state government’s efforts to revive football in Perlis so that the roar of the “Northern Lions” could be heard again.
Wan Zikri Afthar also said that grassroots talent development was among the efforts taken to restore the glory days of Perlis football.
This included the empowerment and support for the implementation of the National Football Development Programme through the existing Akademi Tunas.“For the record, 19 young players were called up to join the Akademi Mokhtar Dahari from 2018 to 2024. (In addition), the strengthening of the Perlis Tunas League in collaboration with stakeholders aims to ensure greater involvement of young players and a competitive league,” he added.
