IPOH: Police have busted a drug processing lab that was operating from a house in Buntong during a raid and seized 18,407g of drugs.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said a 37-year-old man was also arrested.

He said the raid was carried out on Wednesday by the state’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department officers and personnel.

“Various types of drugs worth RM337,683 were seized while the team also confiscated a car worth RM125,000.

“The house was monitored for about 15 minutes before a police team ambushed and arrested the suspect believed to be involved in the processing of the drugs,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said among the drugs confiscated were methamphetamine, heroin, Erimin 5 and ecstasy.

Comm Azizi said various types of chemicals and equipment believed to be used to process the drugs were also seized.

“An initial urine test on the suspect found him positive for methamphetamine.

“The suspect also has a record for 10 crime and drug-related offences,” he said.

Based on investigations, the syndicate is believed to have been active since May this year.

“We are still investigating the case to determine who are the other members of the syndicate as the laboratory could not be operated by a single person,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and the suspect has been remanded until Aug 13.

On the demands for reopening the investigation into the death of navy cadet officer J. Soosaimanicckam, Comm Azizi said Perak police are awaiting further instructions from the deputy public prosecutor (DPP).

He said it would involve reclassifying the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code after police received the instructions.

Comm Azizi said the case had previously been referred to the Ipoh High Court, and a claim to reopen the case was made by the family of the deceased through the submission of a memorandum to the police.

“We will conduct the investigation after receiving instructions from the DPP,” he added.

On Thursday, a total of 29 non-governmental organisations led by Lawyers For Liberty submitted a memorandum requesting the police to reopen the investigation into the death of the cadet officer.

The request was made following the Ipoh High Court’s decision on July 29 where the court set aside the coroner’s open verdict into his death, and revised it to homicide.
