A drone-and-drugs misadventure

Foiled attempt: A drone transporting drugs into the Tapah prison was discovered on the rooftop of the prison.

IPOH: An attempt to deliver drugs into the Tapah prison using a drone has been foiled when warders on their rounds discovered the machine on the rooftop of one of the buildings.

State police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said police believe this was the first time such a tactic had been attempted in the country.

The incident happened on Friday at around 11.30am.

“A prison warder doing his rounds together with other staff discovered a white drone with a small laundry bag attached to it on the rooftop.

“When they inspected the laundry bag, they found a translucent bag containing three packets of what is believed to be drugs.

“One packet had a white powdery substance, weighing 122g, believed to be heroin, while the other two packets contained chunks of crystal believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 12.9g,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Comm Azizi said initial investigations found that this is the first reported case of using a drone to bring drugs from the outside into a prison.

He said that police viewed cases involving drugs seriously and would carry out a thorough probe on drug trafficking activities, especially those targeting prisons.

The case will be investigated under Sections 39A (1) and 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
