Cops issue 967 summonses in KL integrated traffic ops

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 967 summonses were issued for various offences following an integrated traffic operation at several locations in the city.

Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said a total of 2,397 vehicles were inspected during the operation, which was held from 11am on Saturday (Aug 10) till 5am on Sunday (Aug 11).

"We seized 29 cars for illegal modifications.

"A total of eight individuals were detained for testing positive for drugs while 13 others were detained for drunk driving," he told reporters at the scene early Sunday,

The operation, which was headed by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), also involved officers and personnel from the Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID), the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Department of Environment (DOE).

DCP Azry said the operation's main objective is to inspect the vehicles and drivers to ensure that they adhere to traffic regulations.

"The operation is conducted every week in the city following complaints from the public of noisy exhausts as well as dangerous stunts performed by certain road users.

"The DOE conducted checks on the sound of exhausts and discovered several motorcycles were illegally modified," he said.

He advised the public to abide by traffic regulations and not modify their vehicles illegally as well as not to be involved in illegal acts on the road.

"We urge the public to always adhere to instructions from the authorities, including stopping their vehicles when going through roadblocks.

"Any riders who perform dangerous stunts on the road will be detained and prosecuted under the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.

Several motorcycle riders were also seen riding their vehicles against the flow of traffic just to bypass the roadblocks.

Some even stopped at nearby locations to not go through checks by the authorities.

The operation was held at several locations, including Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Bangsar.

Among those present were KL JSPT chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa and KL JPJ deputy director Erick Jusiang.
