Time to come together, show solidarity with our champion, says Nicol

PETALING JAYA: It is time for everyone to come together and show solidarity with national cyclist Azizulhasni Awang, who has dedicated his life to becoming a gold medallist, says Datuk Nicol David.

"He overcame a life threatening condition, sacrificing himself for the dream to reach that gold for us all.

"If there is someone who is heartbroken today, it is him as he is in incredible pain and disappointment and we should be there to lend a shoulder and a helping hand," Nicol said in a Facebook on Saturday (Aug 10).

"We cannot hurt someone who is already in pain, which is not what we do when someone is on the ground," she said.

Nicol said the Olympics meant everything to Azizul and the "Pocket Rocket" did his best to find those small moments where a window of opportunity opens, he was aiming to qualify.

"I have the best memories and moments watching you compete that I will hold dearly in my heart.

"To all Malaysians, let's support and honour our champion who has made our nation proud. Let us have solidarity and compassion and show the true values us Malaysians have," added Nicol.

Azizul was disqualified from keirin competition in Paris, after being deemed to have moved too quickly before the derny left the track.

The jury decided to disqualify the Malaysian in the first round heat on Saturday.
