Gaza school attack decried

Targeting children a ‘grievous crime’, says Wisma Putra

PETALING JAYA: Israel’s aggression should no longer be tolerated by the world after its latest attack on a school in Gaza City, said Wisma Putra.

The Foreign Ministry said Malaysia strongly condemned Israel’s Aug 10 bombing of al-Tabin School, which resulted in over 100 Palestinian deaths, including children, and many critical injuries.

“The deliberate targeting of a school used by displaced Palestinians for refuge is not only a flagrant violation of international law, international humanitarian law and human rights law but is also a grievous crime against humanity.

“Israel has clearly shown once again that it has no desire for peace. It is unconscionable for the international community to just stand by when the Israeli occupying force continues killing women, children and the elderly, without consequences,” said Wisma Putra.

The international community, noted the Foreign Ministry, should no longer tolerate and accept the belligerence of Israel.

“The empty promises of the Israeli government towards achieving a permanent ceasefire in the ongoing peace negotiations rings extremely hollow.

“Malaysia continues to call for Israel’s allies to compel Israel to immediately stop the killings of innocent Palestinians, and stop providing Israel with the tools to continue this genocide.

The Foreign Ministry called for urgent action by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to enforce a ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian aid, and hold Israel accountable for its war crimes.

It also urged the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to work with UN member states to ensure Israel complies with UNSC Resolution 2735 (2024) and respects the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion from July 19.

In a separate statement, Wisma Putra said Malaysia welcomed the Aug 8 joint statement by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, highlighting the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Malaysia, said the Foreign Ministry, hopes that the discussions scheduled for Thursday will yield positive outcomes and prevent further conflict escalation, aiming for a peaceful resolution.

“Malaysia urges all parties to stay focused, committed and respect the peace process,” the ministry said in a statement yesterday.

It reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to peace, stability and adherence to international law, demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the acceptance of Palestine as a full UN member.

The ministry reaffirmed Malaysia’s steadfast support for Palestinians, advocating for their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
