KUALA LUMPUR: A standard operating procedure for accommodation providers including homestay operators is being drafted by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac).
Its Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (pic) said the SOP would help to improve the service, ensuring a consistently positive experience for tourists across the nation’s diverse range of lodgings.
He noted that the ministry is aware of complaints from tourists, who found that the items and facilities promised by homestay operators at the time of booking were not provided.

Upon inquiry, he said tourists were brushed off by the operators who claimed that the amenities had indeed been provided and accused the guests of damaging or losing them, while demanding compensation.
“Therefore, we want to have a list of SOP for homestays,” he said.
Tiong said the ministry also emphasises the importance of safety for travellers.
He said it plans to meet with the relevant ministries and agencies including the Housing and Local Government Ministry to tackle the challenges faced by industry players to enhance safety protocols and accommodation quality.
He emphasised that the ministry is committed to raising the service quality of accommodations throughout the country.
“Motac takes an active role in inspecting and assessing the hotels and homestays to ensure they comply with regulations and uphold required standards,” he said, adding that a licence would only be granted after these facilities passed the assessment.
