MELAKA: Over 400 people in Melaka and more than 70 in Negri Sembilan were moved to various flood relief centres while residents in Labuan moved to higher ground after floods affected some areas in the two states and the Federal Territory.
Melaka witnessed the most significant impact, with 419 people from 123 families evacuated to seven shelters in Alor Gajah.
State disaster management committee secretariat Lt Kol (PA) Kamarulsyah Muslim said Dewan Masjid Ar-Rasyidin, Seri Bayu 2, housed 163 victims from 59 families, followed by Kuala Linggi Japerun (128 people from 30 families) and Balai Raya Paya Lebar (61 people from 13 families).
In addition, 37 people from nine families sought refuge at Ayer Limau Japerun while the rest are sheltering at SK Sungai Jernih, Balai Raya Ayer Paabas and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia Masjid Tanah.
“About 21 areas in the district were affected by the disaster,” he said in a statement, Bernama reported.
The district was hit by floods on Sunday morning following continuous downpours.
Kampung Ramuan China Besar village elder Khairul Anwar Mansol said continuous rain since 5am resulted in their houses in Taman Bandar Baru, Masjid Tanah, being inundated with waist-high waters by 10am.
The Melaka government had announced immediate aid of RM300 to the flood victims.
In Seremban, 75 people from 23 families have been evacuated to five temporary relief centres following flash floods in Port Dickson and Rembau around 8pm on Sunday.
Negri Sembilan Civil Defence Force director Lt Kol (PA) Mohd Nazri Mes Kam said the affected areas were Kampung Sawah Sunggala, Kampung Si Rusa Dalam and Kampung Linggi in Port Dickson as well as Kampung Lubuk China and Kampung Nerambai in Rembau.
He revealed that the floodwaters had receded as at 10am yesterday.
In Labuan, more than 20 houses were flooded following a heavy downpour on Sunday night.
The worst-affected areas included Kampung Gersik Baru and Jalan Jumidar Buyong, where the water level rose to one metre.Several homes in Taman Mahkota Impian were also inundated.Labuan Fire and Rescue Department director Abdul Rahman Ali said firemen assisted the residents in moving their belongings to higher ground.
He urged residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to stay vigilant as the weather remains unpredictable.“We are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to assist those affected.”
