Diving queen’s home turns into tourist hotspot

THE home of China’s teenage diving queen Quan Hongchan (pic) has become a tourist hotspot after she won gold medals at the Olympic games, Sin Chew Daily reported.

Thousands of visitors throng Quan’s home in Maihe village in Guangdong every day since news broke of her victory at the Paris Olympics to take selfies.

The road outside her house has turned into a carnival spot with more than 20 peddlers setting up stalls to cater to visitors.

Many were seen trying to get a photo opportunity with Quan’s mother and grandmother, with some even resorting to climbing the fence outside the house just to catch a glimpse of her family members.

The 17-year-old diver was reported to have said that her motivation for her achievements came from wanting to make more money to pay for her mother’s medical bills.

Her story resonated with the Chinese public.

Quan became a national darling in 2021 after she brought home a gold medal during the Tokyo Olympics.

She recently won two more gold medals in the 10m synchronised platform and women’s 10m platform events.

Her brother cheered for his younger sister via livestream on Douyin, China’s equivalent of TikTok.

He also began selling produce from their village on Douyin and made more than five million yuan (RM3.14mil) in sales over the period.

> Malaysian singer Euzen Lim beat all participants on a reality TV show and was crowned champion of the 2024 season of Make My Record.

Oriental Daily reported that the 18-year-old, who is currently pursuing tertiary studies in Beijing, was given a score of 97.42 by judges for her performance, beating 21 others during the final round on Aug 9.

Lim won the opportunity to record her debut album with the help of the best talents in the industry.

Music industry veteran Ong Peng Chu, who is also the founder of Performers and Artists Rights, praised Lim for her talent and her determination in pursuing her dream.

He said winning the competition would open doors for the young singer and that he would push her to enter more competitions in the future.

It was reported that Ong was credited for launching the careers of local music sensations Shila Amzah and Jeryl Lee Pei Ling.
