Bus driver killed, 12 passengers injured in road accident on North-South Expressway in Johor

KULAI: A bus driver was killed while 12 of his passengers were injured in a three-vehicle pile-up at KM49.4 of the North-South Expressway (Southbound) here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tan Seng Lee said the police were informed about the accident involving two lorries and a bus at about 2.30pm on Thursday (Aug 15).

"Based on early investigation, the bus driver was believed to have not been able to hit the brakes in time when the traffic started moving slowly.

"This led the bus to hit the back of the lorry. The lorry then hit another lorry in front," he said in a statement here on Thursday (Aug 15).

Supt Tan added that the bus driver, a 48-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

"The 12 passengers in the bus, which were heading towards Larkin from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), were also injured in the accident.

"Six of them have been sent to the Kluang Hospital to seek medical care while six others are receiving further treatments at the Kulai Hospital," he said.

He said that there were 10 adults and two children on the bus, including a child with special needs.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death due to reckless or dangerous driving," he said, adding that the bus driver has 13 prior records involving traffic offences.
