Fisherman gets 35 years for ex-wife’s murder

KOTA KINABALU: A fisherman who murdered his ex-wife four years ago has been sentenced to 35 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane by the High Court.

Melo Guli, 41, was ordered to serve the sentence on Tuesday.

After the full trial was completed, High Court judge Justice Faridz Gohim Abdullah found him guilty of murdering Rina Ahmad, 36.

The accused was charged with murdering the victim, who worked as a vegetable seller, in a room on the second floor of a building in the Segama Complex here at 2.30pm on February 11, 2020.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiq Agoes, while lawyer Goldam Hamid represented the accused.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a 43-year-old man was remanded for a week for allegedly stabbing his aunt, with a pair of scissors, in a house in Pekan Darat in Kepala Batas, Penang.

Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district deputy police chief Supt C. Tharmalingam said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

“Based on preliminary investigations, an argument between the suspect and his mother occurred when he had just returned home before the victim, the man’s aunt, tried to break up the fight.

“The suspect who was in an angry state stabbed his aunt, who subsequently died. The man even pushed his mother who fell and injured herself,” Tharmalingam said.

He said the suspect’s mother is currently receiving treatment at the Kepala Batas Hospital.
