Newborn girl found abandoned in Kerian

IPOH: A newborn girl was found abandoned inside a plastic basin near a garbage bin at Titi Serong in Kerian.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said the incident was reported to the police on Wednesday (Aug 14) at about 4.50pm.

He said two men who were passing by the area heard a baby's cries and found a basin with the child inside, adding that the child was wrapped in cloth.

“The baby was left inside the basin behind two green garbage bins located near a main road,” he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters here on Thursday (Aug 15).

He said the men then sent the baby to the Social Welfare Department, and staff from the department then alerted the police.

Comm Azizi said luckily the men heard the cries, otherwise no one would have realised that a baby was left there, and the chances of saving the baby would have been slim.

He said several shops there have CCTVs installed, and police would be checking them for clues.

“We will be questioning several eyewitnesses. The race of the baby has yet to be determined. She only weighs 2.1kg, and seems to be unwell as parts of her face are yellow, and her hands are wrinkled,” he added.

Comm Azizi said investigations are ongoing as police are still trying to determine when the baby was placed there.

“Please do not discard a newborn baby,”he said and added that the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for intentionally abandoning a child.
