KOTA KINABALU: A multi-agency operation to eradicate illegal squatter colonies saw more than 60 houses demolished here.
The operation on Wednesday (Aug 14), led by the Kota Kinabalu police, involved agencies such as Rela, Civil Defence Force, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), Sabah Water Department, National Registration Department, state Lands and Surveys Department and the Welfare Services Department.
“We managed to demolish a total of 62 squatter homes in the exercise,” Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda said, in a statement here on Thursday (Aug 15).
“These structures were illegally built and did not meet the required safety standards.
“This operation is not only meant to eradicate illegal squatter settlements but to also ensure the safety and comfort of the surrounding communities,” he added.
ACP Kasim said the exercise was also important to weed out criminal as well as drug activities and the presence of undocumented migrants in the Sabah capital.
