IPOH: Defiant and unrepentant, one drug trafficker has not called it quits even after having been sentenced to 30 years in jail.
But the inmate’s efforts were eventually futile as a prison officer caught him with a package of drugs a few days ago.
The 39-year-old Iranian is serving his sentence in Tapah Prison, the very place where a drone was discovered dropping off a laundry bag containing drugs on the rooftop.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said the inmate has a record of 10 previous drug-related offences and four criminal ones. The inmate, he added, has been serving the jail sentence since 2018 for trafficking in drugs.
He said during a routine patrol on Wednesday at about 1.15pm at the prison hall, an officer saw the suspect sitting alone facing the wall in a suspicious manner.
“When the officer approached the suspect, he saw the inmate taking something out of his pocket. He then threw a red package on the floor.
“When the officer checked the package, he found two translucent packets, with one containing a yellow substance believed to be heroin weighing 46g and another with pink substances also suspected to be heroin weighing 30g,” he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.
“The total drugs seized are worth RM1,900 and could be used by 50 drug addicts.
“We are still investigating how the drugs were brought into the prison and if the suspect had anything to do with the recent case of a drone carrying a laundry bag containing drugs that were discovered on the rooftop of one of the blocks of the Tapah prison.”
Comm Azizi said the prison has tightened its checks on inmates.
“We will investigate this case from all angles, including the latest tactic of bringing in drugs using a drone to see if it is related in any way,” he said.
