Kerambit-wielding footballer gets 14 days in jail after pleading guilty to brandishing weapon

KUALA LUMPUR: An amateur football player who brought a kerambit (small curved knife) to a football match was sentenced to 14 days in jail by the Sessions Court here after he pleaded guilty to brandishing the weapon.

Judge Norina Zainol Abidin passed the sentence on Muhammad Nur Iman Shafie Mohd Sulin, 22, after he admitted to the offence here on Friday (Aug 16).

According to the charge sheet, Muhammad Nur Iman was accused of displaying the kerambit in a manner that endangered the safety of others.

The offence took place at KLFA Football Centre, Jalan 6/6 Desa Melawati, Wangsa Maju at 12.45am on Aug 4.

The charge was framed under Section 336 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of three months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM500 or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nidzuwan Abd Latif asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence against the accused.

"This case has received public attention and a fitting punishment should be given to the accused to send a clear message to the community," he said.

Lawyer Muhammad Syawal Mohd Razak, who appeared for the accused, pleaded for a lenient sentence.

He said his client was remorseful and apologetic over his actions.

"With this guilty plea, it saves the prosecution time, and my client is truly remorseful and promises not to repeat this offence,” he said.

According to the lawyer, Muhammad Nur Iman did not have a stable income and helped his parents with a nasi lemak business.

The court then passed the sentence and ordered for the jail time to run from the date of sentencing.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Nur Iman claimed trial to a second charge of mischief in an incident outside an entertainment club near Jalan Yap Kwan Seng three months ago.

He is accused of committing mischief by fire by throwing four fire-lit bottles at the club, causing damage to the front of the club at 2.17am on May 9.

He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 14 years imprisonment and a fine, if convicted.

The DPP offered bail at RM15,000 in one surety.

Lawyer Haziq Aizuddin Subhi, who also represented the accused, sought a lower amount on grounds that Muhammad Nur Iman had given his full cooperation during the investigation.

The court then fixed bail at RM12,000 in one surety.

The case is set for mention on Sept 25.
