MELAKA: A company manager and his employee who allegedly ran a nonexistent investment scheme have been fined RM30,000 each for attempted bribery.
Sessions judge Elesabet Paya Wan meted out the penalty on Teo Teck Qing, 26, and Keong Kah Wai, 19, after they pleaded guilty to the offence here on Friday (Aug 16).
They were accused of attempting to pay off a senior police officer as an inducement not to take action against them.
The fine was imposed in default six months' jail.
Teo and Keong were jointly charged under Section 214 of the Penal Code for offering gratification in consideration of concealing an offence.
According to the charge sheet, Teo and Keong offered RM60,000 in cash to Deputy Supt Supari Muhammad to avoid legal action against them for involvement in scam activities.
The offence took place at the front of a supermarket in Simpang Ampat, Alor Gajah district, at 1.15pm on June 1 last year.
DPP Fatin Nur Athirah Zainuddin from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuted, while lawyer Alvin Tan represented the duo.
Teo and Keong paid the fines.
