Tawau residents unfazed as 3.9 quake hits off coast


KOTA KINABALU: Life continued uninterrupted on the south-eastern coast of Sabah, as a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Tawau on Friday (Aug 16) morning.

"We did not feel anything. The building didn’t shake, and no one panicked. Everyone just went about their day," said Herny Kamil, a general worker at a local sundry shop.

Herny only learned about the earthquake through a friend's Facebook post, which shared a Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) report.

MetMalaysia confirmed the weak earthquake occurred at 10.19am with an epicentre 36km east of Semporna, at a depth of 19km.

While the tremor may have been felt in parts of Malaysia, there were no reports of damage or disruptions.

MetMalaysia said it would continue to monitor the situation closely.
