MELAKA: Two men who tried to give a senior police officer a RM60,000 bribe while being investigated for scam activities were each fined RM30,000 by the court.
The duo, who claimed to be a manager and employee of a non-existent investment company, were sentenced after they pleaded guilty to attempting to pay Deputy Supt Supari Muhammad as an inducement to not take action against them.
The sentence was meted out on Teo Teck Qing, 26, and Keong Kah Wai, 19, by Sessions Court judge Elesabet Paya Wan yesterday.
The court also ordered both to be sentenced to an additional six months’ imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine.
Teo and Keong were jointly charged under Section 214 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Based on the charge sheet, Teo and Keong gave the bribe in cash to avoid legal action against them for being involved in scam activities.
The offence took place at the front of a supermarket in Simpang Ampat in Alor Gajah district at 1.15pm on June 1, 2023.Deputy public prosecutor Fatin Nur Athirah Zainuddin from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission appeared as prosecutor while lawyer Alvin Tan represented the two.
Teo and Keong paid the fine.
